Dior is hosting the first Raf Simons Spring 2013 Haute Couture collection in Shanghai on March 30. The catwalk show will gather 300 of the elite Chinese and will be followed by an exclusive gala dinner. The event which will take place at No. 5 on the Bund is the first by a major fashion house this year. Unlike previous years when Prada, Armani and Chanel hosted catwalk shows in China, the slow down in sales seems to have prompted a change in marketing strategy. Chanel will be hosting its exclusive catwalk show of the Fall Winter 2013 collection in Singapore, in May.

Louis Vuitton Arrives On Shanghai Express

Louis Vuitton brought a major dose of Belle Epoque glamour to Shanghai Thursday night, reprising its extravagant fall train-themed show from Paris down to the last detail.
True to the invitation’s indication of a 9 p.m. sharp start time, the same vintage locomotive that awed the industry audience in Paris pulled into a massive set erected on the waterfront of the historic Bund.

Postshow, attendees clamored to have their pictures taken in front of the vehicle. They also raced to capture snaps of celebrities such as Laetitia Casta, Fan Bingbing, Alexa Chung and Gong Li, who climbed aboard the train and waved to their enthusiastic fans.

The show, undoubtedly one of the most theatrical fashion events ever here, capped off a two-day publicity extravaganza. Louis Vuitton celebrated also  the reopening of its enlarged and refurbished flagship in the Plaza 66 mall with a cocktail and gala dinner that featured a performance of two Chopin nocturnes by classical pianist Li Yundi.

The Plaza 66 store, which opens to the public on Saturday, is considered one of Vuitton’s biggest, on par with the Champs-Elysées flagship. The Peter Marinoengineered overhaul, which upgrades the store to “Maison” status, took nearly two years to complete.

Interior of the flagship

The facade features an interlocking mesh of white metal over mirrored glass, echoing the brand’s monogram. Interior elements include Italian marble floors, a striking circular staircase, a private fourth-floor receiving area for VIP guests and a series of outdoor terraces planted with fern pine trees. True to Maison form, the store features a selection of artwork, including a hanging installation of pyrite by Teresita Fernández above the jewelry area and a trio of abstract steel sculptures by Chinese artist Qiu Zhijie.

At the opening cocktail Wednesday night, LVMH chairman and chief executive officer Bernard Arnault said he considers the store “one of the most beautiful we ever did with Peter [Marino].”

Gucci Takes Shanghai.

[dropcap]C[/dropcap]hinese actress Li Bingbing (李冰冰) is now taking on her newest role as the face of Gucci’s accessories ad campaign. This past weekend, Gucci creative director Frida Giannini presented Li as the luxury house’s new “it girl” at three events in Shanghai, hosting a lunchtime cocktail event to debut the new advertising campaign, as well as Giannini’s first-ever China fashion show at Wai Tan Yuan.

Following on the heels of  Dior’s recent fashion show on the bund (see our blog article)  , Giannini’s runway show of Gucci’s F/W 2012-2013 collection was attended by more than 500 guests. Following the show, Gucci held an afterparty at the Rockbund Art Museum  in a specially constructed “Gucci Club,” a three-floor pop-up space featuring 360-degree views of the Pudong skyline.

As Giannini wrote of the party for the Daily Beast:

“We wanted to give our guests a true Italian experience and recreated the Gucci show space, down to the plush burgundy rug and hanging bouquet of mini gardenias and orchids used in Milan for the Fall/Winter 2012-2013. For the first time ever, we’re showing men’s and women’s on the runway together and I’m looking forward to seeing both collections side by side. For the show, we’ve flown in Gucci girls, like Karmen Pedaru and Nadja Bender, but have also cast top Chinese models, including Fei Fei and Bonnie Chen. Before the lights go down, our special guest, Hilary Swank, slips into the front row, next to Bryan Ferry, Lapo and Li. There’s an energy in the air and it carries over to post-show party, just behind the runway tent in the RockBund.”

Dior Spring / Summer 2012 collection in Shanghai, China.

[dropcap]B[/dropcap]ill Gaytten’s Spring / summer 2012 collection for Dior  took the runway for a second show  in Shanghai, China. It was a grand last opportunity for Bill Gaytten, who stepped up to the plate after John Galliano’s sudden exit, to show off his skills for Dior. Now with the recent appointment of Raf Simons as artistic director, it was a wonderful chance for the 51-year-old designer to present his second and final collection for the French fashion house.

Inspired by Fifties silhouettes and shapes, the Spring and Summer 12 collection was comprised heavily of ball gowns, pleated skirts and delicate bead work.
